Process: This work began with fragments of fabric that once belonged to the client’s mother. Each piece was gently cut, stitched and carefully into layers of textured paste, allowing the fabrics to move across the canvas in soft, flowing forms. The fabrics do not stop at the edges of the canvas; instead, they wrap around it, suggesting that the flow continues beyond what is visible. Blues and whites form the textured current of the river, while layers of sand, gold, and earth-toned pigments create the riverbanks that hold and guide its movement.

Embedded within the surface are real grains of sand, gold tones, and textured layers that give the work both physical depth and emotional weight and inviting the viewer to feel the piece as much as see it.

The Inspiration

The painting draws from the quiet metaphor of a river. A river arrives, flows through the landscape, shapes it, and continues its journey, leaving behind traces of its presence.

Here, the river represents a life that once moved powerfully through another’s world. The fabrics become the flowing current, while the banks, formed with sand, gold, and layered textures represent the places where memories settle, gather, and remain.

The Story

This painting was created for a daughter using the fabrics her mother had worked with before she passed. These materials were transformed into the flowing body of the river, symbolizing a life that moved through her world with energy, warmth, and presence.

As the river flows across the canvas, pieces break away and settle along the banks, representing memories that remain. The sandy textures hold these fragments gently, much like the way memories settle and become part of us.

Though the river moves onward, it never truly disappears. It leaves its shine, its imprint, and its movement behind. The gold within the piece reflects that enduring light: the brilliance of a mother’s presence that continues to live within her daughter’s life.

Gold appears throughout the piece as a quiet symbol of the light a person leaves behind. Even after the river has moved forward, its shimmer remains in the landscape it touched.

This work ultimately speaks of continuity: of love that flows forward, of memories that remain anchored, and of the quiet understanding that while someone may move beyond our physical world, their presence continues to shape the landscape of our lives.
