Process: The painting began with designing the key visual elements and placing the most striking ones at the center, allowing the surrounding symbols to gradually unfold around them. Beneath this sits an unconventional oblique grid of color, which is a quiet metaphor for life’s structure. While life may appear like fixed squares, the tilted grid suggests that we each see and shape it differently, coloring it in our own way as these fragments of culture and memory come together across the canvas

The Inspiration

This painting began with a conversation between strangers.

When the client first met the artist, she spoke not about art, but about her mother, who she had recently lost. In that first meeting, memories poured out: stories of strength, love, discipline, laughter, travel, and belief. She wanted something she could see every day which could be a reminder that her mother’s presence had not disappeared, but transformed into guidance, courage, and quiet power.

The resulting work is a deeply personal visual collage, a landscape of symbols drawn from the life they shared.

The Story

At the heart of the work is Ganesha, the source of her mother’s spiritual strength and the symbol of new beginnings. Surrounding him are fragments of their shared life: a book representing her belief that education brings freedom, a bird reaching for the sun symbolizing aspiration, trees with fruit for deep roots and resilience, and a Lotus Flower representing depth and love.

Elements of memory and joy appear throughout - Bharatanatyam legs celebrating her love for dance, cricket wickets honoring her father, a temple dear to her heart, and small symbols of travels they shared.

Together, these pieces form a visual map of a mother’s influence and a reminder that even in absence, her strength continues to guide and inspire. In that way, the painting continues its purpose: a daily conversation between memory, love and becoming.
